Most homes need a licensed electrician to add a dedicated outlet if one isn't already present near the install location. The plug-and-play configuration is the single biggest installation advantage of the Freeflow Series, and the Monterey is the highest-jet, largest-group Freeflow you can install this way. Owners who want faster heat recovery in cold climates can convert to 230 V later through a licensed electrician.

The FROG® Sanitizing System is a pre-charged mineral cartridge platform that releases sanitizer and minerals automatically, Hot Spring's exact phrasing on the Monterey page is "Freeflow spas work with the FROG Sanitizing System to automatically release sanitizer and minerals for cleaner, softer water" (U.S. availability). It is the standard water-care platform for the entry-tier Freeflow Series. The FreshWater® Salt System (on Hot Spot) and FreshWater® IQ Salt System (on Highlife and Limelight) generate chlorine from salt rather than dispensing it from a cartridge. FROG suits if you want the simplest possible water-care routine; FreshWater Salt suits if you want the soft-water feel of saline at a higher upfront tier.

The Excursion has 4 adult seats including a full-body lounger and 33 jets; the Monterey has 5 adult seats with no lounger but 40 jets and a heavier filled weight (3,515 lbs vs 3,175 lbs). Choose the Excursion if a single soaker wants a recline lounger experience and 4 adults is the social max; choose the Monterey if you want 5 adult positions and the highest jet count in Freeflow.

The Monterey and the Aptos™ both seat 5 adults, but the Monterey is a 6'6" × 6'6" rectangle with 40 jets, while the Aptos is a 6'6"-diameter round footprint with 21 jets and an integrated whirlpool. Choose the Aptos if you prefer a round shape, barrier-free open bench, and the Turbo Whirlpool feature; choose the Monterey if you want the highest jet count in the Freeflow Series, contoured neck pillows, and a rectangular footprint.

Yes. The Monterey is 115 V Plug-N-Play or 230 V Convertible. Conversion to 230 V increases the heater output from 1,000 W to 4,000 W, meaning faster heat recovery and stronger ambient-cold performance. A licensed electrician should perform the 230 V conversion. Monterey owners in cold climates including Minnesota run the spa daily year-round, indicating cold-climate performance is workable in either configuration.

The Hot Spot® Series is one tier above Freeflow, Hot Spring's value tier (now). Hot Spot models use the FreshWater® Salt System Ready platform, Wavemaster® jet pumps with a SilentFlo 5000® circulation pump, and carry longer cabinet and component warranty terms (5/2 vs 2/1). The Monterey uses the simpler 2-Speed 1.5 HP jet pump, the FROG® Sanitizing System, and rotomolded unibody construction. Hot Spot is the right step-up if you want salt-water sanitization and longer warranty; the Monterey is the right pick if you want the most jets in a 5-adult plug-and-play spa and the simplest installation.

The Monterey's rotationally molded durable unibody is single-piece construction, there are no panel-and-frame seams. The unibody design is lightweight, portable, and visually modern, fitting easily on patios, decks, and small spaces. The 425 lb dry weight is the heaviest of the Freeflow lineup but still well below most full-foam panel-and-frame spas.

It fits less well if you want a reclining lounger, salt-water sanitization standard, the longest possible warranty, smart-app control, or a top-tier shell ecosystem, those you should evaluate Excursion, or step up to Hot Spot or higher.
